In the latest announcement after a series of doping retests from both the 2008 Beijing and 2012 London Olympic Games, Moldovan weightlifter Anatoli Ciricu has tested positive for the anabolic agent Dehydrochlormethyltestosterone. An IWF Public Disclosure released this week disclosed the result and announced Ciricu’s provisional suspension.
Ciricu is also the 2012 European Champion (held in Antalya, Turkey) and won silver at the 2011 European Championships (held in Kazan, Russia).
If upheld, the athlete’s results from London will likely be overturned. Ciricu originally finished in third place in the men’s 94kg category in London, making him the third and final original medalist from that category to test positive for a banned substance. Of the original nine top finishers in the London 94kg category, six have been provisionally suspended and face the loss of their results. They are:
Ilya Ilyin (1st)
Alexandr Ivanov (2nd)
Anatoli Ciricu (3rd)
Andrey Demanov (4th)
Intigam Zairov (6th)
Almas Uteshov (7th)
If all suspensions are upheld and the above results are overturned, that leaves the following London podium:
Saeid Mohammadpour (Iran, originally 5th)
Minjae Kim (South Korea, originally 8th)
Tomasz Zielinski (Poland, originally 9th; Zielinski was removed from competition in Brazil earlier this summer after a positive doping test)
