Report: Liao Hui Ends Retirement, Sets Goal for 2020 Tokyo Olympics

According to outlet Sports.Cina.com, 2008 Beijing Olympic Gold Medalist Liao Hui has announced he’s back to training in weightlifting and has his eyes set on competing at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.

The news comes as a surprise to some after Hui — also a three-time World Champion and holder of all Senior world records in the men’s 69kg weightlifting category — announced his retirement before the 2016 Olympics after he was not chosen to represent China in Rio.

Hui’s countryman — Shi Zhiyong, who is 23 years old — won gold in Rio in the 69kg class.

The 29-year old Hui won gold at the 2008 Beijing Olympics and dominated the weight class for the majority of his international career.

However, Hui was disqualified following the 2010 Weightlifting World Championships after testing positive for Boldenone and Androstatrienedione. He was subsequently stripped of the 2010 World Championship and the World Records he set at that competition in the clean & jerk and total.

Following the positive test, Hui received a ban from international competition that left him ineligible for the 2012 London Olympic Games. After serving his suspension, Hui would come back to win the 2013 and 2014 World Weightlifting Championships, adding to his other World Championship title from 2009.
