The women’s 48kg class kicked off Olympic competition in Rio today, and the session also featured the first American lifter of the Olympics. After an exciting session — the women’s 48kg class only had one session at this Olympics — the podium included lifters from Thailand, Indonesia, and Japan.
1. Sopita Tanasan (Thailand)
2. Sri Wahyuni Agustiani (Indonesia)
3. Hiromi Miyake (Japan)
Agustiani made two massive attempts at 115kg to secure gold — the last two attempts of the session — but missed both her cleans.
The 48kg competition included 12 lifters, with 10 recording totals. Indonesia’s Chanu Saikhom Mirabai bombed out in the clean & jerk, and Vietnam’s Thi Huyen Vuong — a favorite of one BarBend contributor to make the podium — failed to record a successful lift in the snatch.
American lifter Morghan King opened with an 80kg snatch make, but she missed her second attempt at 82kg. Flanked by Shahin Nassirinia — one of USA Weightlifting’s Olympic coaches and the 1999 World Champion — and new USAW Technical Director Pyrros Dimas, King came out and nailed her third attempt at 83kg to break Tara Nott‘s longstanding record in the snatch (set back in 2000, the year Nott won Olympic gold).
